Purpose

The Interpreter is responsible for providing accurate, impartial, confidential, and culturally appropriate interpretation and language support during PARWA activities. The position helps ensure that language barriers do not prevent community members from accessing protection information, case management services, referrals, feedback mechanisms, or other project support.

The Interpreter provides language support only and does not undertake protection assessments, make case management decisions, or independently handle complaints or referrals.

Key Responsibilities

Interpretation & Language Support

  • Provide accurate interpretation between Dari/Pashto and Urdu/English, as required, during project activities and interactions with communities.
  • Support interpretation during protection screenings, case management interactions, community outreach, awareness sessions, referrals, meetings, trainings, and other project activities.
  • Communicate information accurately without adding, omitting, changing, or independently interpreting the meaning of information provided.
  • Ensure interpretation is respectful, impartial, culturally sensitive, and appropriate to the individual's communication needs.
  • Support communication with women, children, persons with disabilities, older persons, and other vulnerable individuals in a sensitive and appropriate manner.

Translation & Project Support

  • Support translation of IEC materials, community messages, forms, referral information, and other project documents where required.
  • Assist project staff in ensuring information communicated to communities is understandable and linguistically appropriate.
  • Flag language barriers, cultural sensitivities, or communication issues that may affect effective service delivery.
  • Support community activities, meetings, and field visits where interpretation or language assistance is required.
  • Coordinate with Protection Officers, Case Management Assistants, Field Coordinators, and other project staff for interpretation requirements.
  • The project requires information and awareness activities to be accessible to vulnerable communities, alongside protection case management and community-based protection services.

Confidentiality & Professional Boundaries

  • Maintain strict confidentiality of beneficiary, case, complaint, and other sensitive information encountered during interpretation.
  • Ensure information obtained through interpretation is not recorded, shared, discussed, or used outside authorised project processes.
  • Remain neutral and impartial and avoid providing personal advice, opinions, promises, or recommendations to beneficiaries.
  • Do not independently conduct assessments, determine eligibility, make referrals, manage cases, or handle complaints.
  • Immediately refer any protection, safeguarding, or complaint-related matter received directly from a community member to the appropriate authorised project staff.

Documentation & Coordination

  • Maintain basic records of interpretation and translation support provided, where required.
  • Inform the Field Coordinator of interpretation needs, communication barriers, or operational issues affecting assigned activities.
  • Participate in relevant orientations, trainings, team meetings, and briefings.
  • Support timely coordination of interpretation requirements for field and office-based activities.

Compliance & Safeguarding

  • Follow Do No Harm, confidentiality, informed consent, inclusion, and non-discrimination principles during all interactions.
  • Comply with organisational Safeguarding, PSEAH, Child Protection, data protection, Code of Conduct, and other applicable policies.
  • Maintain professional and respectful conduct with beneficiaries, staff, community members, and stakeholders.
  • Immediately report safeguarding concerns or misconduct through established organisational channels.

Other Duties

  • Perform any other duties related to the position, as reasonably assigned by the Supervisor, in line with organisational policies and operational requirements.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Preferably Bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences, Humanities, or a related field.
  • Minimum 1 year of relevant experience in interpretation, translation, community work, humanitarian assistance, protection, legal, or social-service settings.
  • Strong proficiency in Dari and/or Pashto, with strong proficiency in Urdu; working knowledge of English is an advantage.
  • Ability to interpret accurately and communicate clearly across different cultural and community contexts.
  • Experience working with vulnerable communities, refugees, or displaced populations is an advantage.
  • Strong understanding of confidentiality, neutrality, professional boundaries, and respectful communication.
  • Good listening, interpersonal, and communication skills.

Policies & Compliance

  • The position is subject to and governed by the organisation’s policies, procedures, codes of conduct and ethical standards.
  • All staff are required to comply with all applicable policies at all times as a condition of employment.
