Purpose

The GBV Interpreter provides confidential, accurate, and survivor-centred interpretation support to facilitate communication between GBV survivors and service providers.

 

The role ensures that all communication is conducted in a respectful, neutral, and culturally appropriate manner while maintaining strict confidentiality and ethical standards.

Key Responsibilities

Interpretation Support

  • Provide accurate and complete interpretation during interactions between survivors and GBV Case Workers, GBV Mental Health Officer, and other service providers.
  • Ensure messages are conveyed clearly without omission, addition, or alteration.
  • Use appropriate, sensitive, and culturally respectful language when interpreting GBV-related discussions.

Confidentiality & Ethical Practice

  • Maintain strict confidentiality of all information shared during interpretation.
  • Ensure no information is disclosed outside authorised communication channels.
  • Adhere to safeguarding, PSEA, confidentiality, and Do No Harm principles at all times.

Survivor-Centred Communication

  • Ensure respectful, non-judgmental, and culturally appropriate communication.
  • Support a safe and comfortable environment for survivors during interactions.
  • Remain neutral, impartial, and professional at all times.

Coordination & Support

  • Coordinate with the GBV Field Supervisor and relevant team members for scheduling and support.
  • Provide interpretation support during case management sessions, referrals, and other programme activities as required.

Boundaries of Role

  • Do not engage in case management, counselling, or decision-making.
  • Do not provide advice, personal opinions, or interpretation beyond language support.
  • Do not collect or record case information independently.
  • Do not interact with survivors outside assigned sessions or without supervision.

Other Duties

  • Perform any other duties related to the position, as reasonably assigned by the Supervisor, in line with organisational policies and operational requirements.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Preferably Bachelor’s level education.
  • Fluency in Dari and/or Pashto is required, with the ability to interpret accurately between local languages and Urdu/English, as applicable.
  • Preferably some experience in interpretation, community work, or humanitarian settings.
  • Strong understanding of confidentiality and ethical conduct.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
