Brief Introduction of the Project:
Penny Appeal Pakistan is launching a climate-resilient Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) and Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) initiative in the SUCCESS villages of District Sujawal. This initiative strategically prioritizes communities that were previously engaged under the Sustainable Population and Health for Future (SPHF) project, ensuring continuity, long-term sustainability, and deeper community-level impact.
The project is expected to directly benefit approximately 7,000 individuals, including 1,620 men, 1,687 women, 1,811 boys, and 1,882 girls. It will be implemented through inclusive, participatory, and gender-sensitive community engagement processes to ensure equitable access, active participation, and a strong sense of community ownership.
As a core innovation, the project will introduce a model rainwater harvesting system to promote sustainable water solutions in flood-prone and water-insecure areas. This system will be designed to collect and store rainwater from rooftops or communal structures and will incorporate features such as first-flush diverters, sediment filtration, and covered storage tanks. These elements will ensure the collected water remains safe and usable, particularly in communities where conventional water sources are limited or unreliable. The model system is intended to be a scalable, cost-effective solution for similar geographic contexts experiencing water scarcity.
To bridge practical implementation with academic research, the project will establish partnerships with local universities and research institutions. These academic partners will be invited to document, analyze, and evaluate the system’s technical design and field performance. This collaboration will foster applied research and create opportunities for student involvement through field studies or thesis work. The initiative will culminate in the production of a comprehensive report outlining best practices, design recommendations, and lessons learned. This report will serve as a valuable reference for replicating rainwater harvesting models in other vulnerable rural and peri-urban communities.
