1. Background
The International Water Management Institute (IWMI), a CGIAR Research Center, is seeking a proactive and motivated intern to support and assist in conducting Groundwater Modelling studies under ongoing FCDO- funded Water Resources Accountability Programme (WRAP) in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. This internship provides an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience in groundwater modelling within the broader context of sustainable water resource management and agricultural systems. Through hands-on involvement in data collection, stakeholder engagement, field assessments, and knowledge-sharing activities, the intern will contribute to advancing inclusive, equitable, and sustainable water governance. The intern will assist in groundwater model development, calibration, verification, sensitivity analysis, documentation, and model application on a regional and sub-regional scale, planning regional investigations and interpretation of aquifer parameters from lithological data, use of Geographic Information System (GIS) applications to review and develop model inputs and outputs. She/he will also assist in building the framework for assessing the basin-scale hydrologic changes using climatic and groundwater estimations. She/he will also assist in writing donor reports and research publications.
2. Key Responsibilities:
• Assist in collecting the hydrological variables from the national and international data archives.
• Correct groundwater level data for the mean sea level using high-resolution DEM. • Pre-process the primary data in different image processing software’s.
• Assist in collecting and compiling earth land surface datasets including rainfall, digital elevation model (DEM), watershed characteristics, soil characteristics, and land use/land cover data from various satellite remote sensing archives.
• Assist in Parameterizing the groundwater model (e.g., MODFLOW) using the collected data from different data repositories.
• Assist in calibrating and validating the groundwater model for different land use and climate change scenarios.
• Analyzing the collected datasets for computing the changes in water storage on different Spatio-temporal bases.
• Compile and review available information on artificial groundwater recharge including groundwater levels, lithology, environmental impacts, and aquifer characteristics. • Analyze the datasets for watershed characteristics to identify the potential recharge zones. • Assist in identifying the potential groundwater recharge site as per developed criteria and model outputs.
• Provide support in organizing meetings, dialogues, and workshops for the project.
• Assist in preparing high-quality project reports according to project timelines. • Perform other related duties, special projects, and other miscellaneous work as assigned. 3. Required Qualifications and Skills:
• A recently completed master’s degree in water resources engineering/management, hydrology, geohydrology and/or geoscience or any other related discipline.
• Demonstrated interest or academic background in groundwater studies, groundwater modeling, agriculture water management with respect to groundwater.
• Possess advanced knowledge of groundwater hydrology principles and knowledge of surface and groundwater interactions.
• Some prior experience with groundwater model development and application; specifically, simulating the impact of climate change on groundwater recharge, surface-groundwater interaction, and groundwater yield, including the detailed analysis of underlying systems.
• Some prior experience with groundwater modeling software (e.g. MODFLOW). • Ability to use Geographic Information Systems (GIS) tools and skills in Python, R or other data analysis software’s and willingness to learn.
• Excellent oral and written language skills in English, including effective listening and strong verbal and written communication abilities. Strong ability to analyze, manipulate, and present data and model results.
• Willingness to travel to field sites in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
• Self-motivated, flexible, and committed to learning in a field-based environment.
4. Duration of the Assignment:
The interns will be hired for the above tasks for a period of one year at the IWMI Office in Lahore with travel to other project sites as required.
