1. Background 

The International Water Management Institute (IWMI), a CGIAR Research Center, is seeking two  proactive and motivated interns to support research and field activities to assist with data collection,  processing, and analysis for water budgeting and management studies. This internship provides an  excellent opportunity to gain practical experience in hydrological monitoring, data analysis, and  applied research related to water resource management, irrigation performance, and agricultural  sustainability. This position will focus on supporting research in evapotranspiration (ET) estimation,  canal flow monitoring, rainfall analysis, and groundwater assessment, providing a comprehensive  understanding of water budgeting in irrigated and rainfed agricultural systems. Interns will work with  real-time field measurements, remote sensing data and analytical tools to characterize the water  budget for different canal command and rainfed areas in Punjab and KP. She/he will also assist in  building the ET models for different irrigated districts, GIS-based mapping, spatial data processing  and water budget analysis. She/he will also assist in writing donor reports and research publications. 

2. Key Responsibilities: 

• Assist in processing field-based and satellite-based evapotranspiration data (e.g., WaPOR,  SEBAL, or Landsat/Sentinel datasets).  

• Conduct quality checks and prepare ET maps for target areas. 

• Utilize remote sensing data and field instruments to collect and analyze data related to  agricultural water use, crop water requirements, and irrigation practices. 

• Assist in compiling canal flow records from irrigation departments. 

• Gather rainfall and climate data from various sources national and international archives  • Collect and organize groundwater level and quality data. 

• Contribute to preparation of seasonal and annual water balance sheets. • Support in identifying water deficits and surpluses at canal command and district levels. • Participate in site visits for data validation (e.g., canal flow measurements, field  observations). 

• Assist in stakeholder consultations with irrigation departments, farmers, and water user  associations. 

• Prepare visual summaries (tables, charts, maps) for technical reports and presentations. • Correct groundwater level data for the mean sea level using high-resolution DEM. • Pre-process the primary data in different image processing software’s. 

• Provide support in organizing meetings, dialogues, and workshops for the project.  • Assist in preparing high-quality project reports according to project timelines.  • Perform other related duties, special projects, and other miscellaneous work as assigned.

3. Required Qualifications and Skills: 

• A recently completed master’s degree in water resources engineering/management,  hydrology, agricultural and/or geoscience or any other related discipline.  

• Demonstrated interest or academic background in hydrological studies, ET modeling,  agriculture water management with respect to water budget analysis.  

• Possess good knowledge of irrigation systems, hydrology or water balance concepts,  including surface water, groundwater, and rainfall-runoff relationships.  

• Prior experience in remote sensing and GIS applications for water resources, including  satellite-based ET estimation (e.g., SEBAL and WaPOR) and analysis of land use/land cover  change.  

• Proficiency in Geographic Information Systems (ArcGIS, QGIS) and data  analysis/programming tools such as Python, R, or MATLAB; willingness to develop advanced  analytical skills 

• Ability to handle large datasets (e.g., satellite imagery, hydrological time series) and translate  technical results into clear visual outputs for decision-making. 

• Excellent oral and written communication skills in English, with the ability to prepare concise  technical notes and presentations. 

• Willingness to travel to field sites in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa for data collection and  verification. 

• Self-motivated, detail-oriented, and committed to learning in a multidisciplinary and field based environment. 

4. Duration of the Assignment: 

The interns will be hired for the above tasks for a period of one year at the IWMI Office in Lahore with  travel to other project sites as required.
