Job Summary: The Pathology Technician/Laboratory Technician is responsible for performing routine diagnostic laboratory tests, ensuring accurate and timely reporting of results, maintaining laboratory equipment and supplies, and ensuring adherence to infection prevention and biosafety standards. The position supports clinical diagnosis and treatment through quality laboratory services.

Aga Khan Health Service, Pakistan, is looking for a competent Pathology Technician / Laboratory Technician based at RHC Shagram, Upper-Chitral in Chitral Region. 

Key Responsibilities:

A. Laboratory Diagnostic Services

  • Conduct routine laboratory investigations as per facility scope and physician request.
  • Perform tests including hematology, biochemistry (basic), microscopy, urinalysis, stool examination, blood grouping, pregnancy test, and other basic diagnostic tests.
  • Conduct rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) such as malaria, dengue, hepatitis, HIV (where authorized), typhoid, ETC
  • Perform sputum examination and support TB diagnosis services as per national guidelines.
  • Ensure accuracy and reliability of test results before reporting.

B. Sample Collection and Handling

  • Collect blood samples and other specimens following proper phlebotomy procedures.
  • Label specimens correctly and ensure proper storage and transportation.
  • Ensure correct handling of sputum, urine, stool, and other biological samples.
  • Maintain patient safety and comfort during sample collection.

C. Quality Assurance and Quality Control

  • Follow laboratory SOPs and quality assurance protocols.
  • Perform daily internal quality control (QC) checks for laboratory equipment and test kits.
  • Maintain QC records and ensure calibration and standardization of instruments.
  • Participate in external quality assurance (EQA) programs where applicable.

D. Biosafety and Infection Prevention Control (IPC)

  • Follow standard biosafety and infection prevention practices in the laboratory.
  • Ensure proper use of PPE including gloves, masks, and lab coats.
  • Maintain safe disposal of sharps, infectious waste, and laboratory chemicals.
  • Ensure disinfection of laboratory surfaces and safe handling of spills.
  • Follow guidelines for handling high-risk infectious samples.

E. Equipment Operation and Maintenance

  • Operate laboratory equipment such as microscopes, centrifuge, hematology analyzers, glucometers, and other instruments.
  • Ensure daily cleaning and preventive maintenance of equipment.
  • Maintain equipment logbooks and report malfunctions promptly.
  • Ensure proper functioning of refrigerator/freezer for reagents and samples.

F. Reagent and Stock Management

  • Maintain stock registers for reagents, test kits, chemicals, and consumables.
  • Ensure proper storage conditions and monitoring of expiry dates.
  • Forecast laboratory supplies and submit timely requisitions.
  • Ensure proper labeling and safe storage of chemicals and reagents.

G. Record Keeping and Reporting

  • Maintain laboratory registers and patient test records accurately.
  • Issue laboratory reports timely with proper documentation and signatures.
  • Maintain confidentiality of patient test results.
  • Prepare daily/weekly/monthly laboratory statistics and submit to facility management.
  • Report notifiable diseases and abnormal findings as per national surveillance guidelines.

H. Support to Public Health Programs

  • Support TB program activities including sputum collection and follow-up testing.
  • Support malaria, dengue, hepatitis, and other communicable disease screening programs.
  • Assist in outbreak investigations and disease surveillance activities.
  • Coordinate with EPI, MNCH, and other programs where laboratory support is required.

I. Coordination and Professional Conduct

  • Coordinate with medical staff for timely communication of critical results.
  • Provide guidance to patients regarding sample collection requirements.
  • Participate in trainings, supportive supervision, and facility quality improvement activities.
  • Maintain discipline, punctuality, and professional behavior.
  • Perform any other duties assigned by the Facility In-Charge relevant to laboratory services.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT) from a recognized institute.
  • Minimum 1–2 years of experience in laboratory services preferred.
  • Registration with relevant council/authority
  • Results-driven, ethical and adaptable professional with a strong service and stakeholder focus.
  • Strong integrity with the sensitivity to manage confidential information.
  • Demonstrates superior organizational skills and the agility to multitask and assume changing strategic responsibilities in a dynamic environment.
  • Possesses strong integrity, intellectual humility and demonstrable expertise in navigating ambiguity and constant change.
  • Shows resilience, flexibility and perseverance, especially during challenging periods.

  • Strong knowledge of laboratory testing procedures and SOPs.
  • Knowledge of infection prevention and biosafety protocols.
